Barbie Smith’s journey to becoming an oil painter began during childhood with a desire to express herself through the art of sketching with pencil and paper. The result was a deep sense of purpose and satisfaction which could be found in no other activity.
As an art student at San Jose State University Barbie was introduced to the medium of acrylic paints and also to working on canvas for the first time. She continued to use Acrylics, working in a larger scale on wall murals.
In 2007, Barbie began studying in oils with local artists in the Sacramento area. She has been privileged to study with Randy Blasquez, Don Hatfield, Daniel Mundy, June Carey, and most recently with Terry Miura. Through continued instruction and consistent application, she has become more fluent in the language of expressive brushwork to convey her impression and interpretation of the scene that she is depicting.
She is inspired by the spectacular colors found in God’s creation, strong patterns of light and shadow, California landscapes, and cityscapes with unique architectural design. Using a limited palette, harmonious color, and simplified design, she paints with passion and a focus on the expression of beauty. Commissions are welcomed.
